Domestic passenger vehicle sales reach new peak in FY25, driven by SUV demand

Domestic passenger vehicle sales are estimated to have advanced in low single-digits in the just-ended fiscal year largely due to a high base and slowing demand. Sales, however, reached a new peak for the third consecutive year in FY25, lifted by robust demand for sports utility vehicles (SUVs). Carmakers dispatched an estimated 4.34 million vehicles in the domestic market, a rise of 3% from 4.22 million vehicles in FY24.

Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer (marketing and sales) at Maruti Suzuki, said that while urban markets remained largely flat during the year, the company’s rural markets performed better, with sales rising about 10% last fiscal.

Exports scaled an all-time high of 755,000-765,000 vehicles last fiscal, according to initial estimates by industry stakeholders. During the year, six of the 10 top-selling models in the country belonged to Maruti Suzuki, according to data from Jato Dynamics.
