Welcome to the month of October, a month of apple picking, pumpkin carving and many important days and themes that are worth marking your calendar for. And on today’s episode we’re kicking off the month Brady Bunch style to help get you “Up To Speed” with some of our October happenings.

Month-long themes

  • Domestic Violence Awareness: Since 1989, October has been recognized as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Throughout the month we’ll be focusing on spreading awareness and uniting to help end the abuse across the country.
  • Cybersecurity Awareness: October is also Cybersecurity Month, an opportunity to make sure you’re keeping yourself, and Verizon, safe and secure. Tune in on October 16th for a discussion with Chief Information Security officer Nasirin Rezai to learn some best practices for staying vigilant when it comes to all things technology and data security.
  • Breast Cancer Awareness: While October is recognized as breast cancer awareness month, there’s so much we can do now and beyond. Get a free screening, take our pledge to fight breast cancer, and turn up the pink on your next Bluejeans meeting. Be sure to tune in for two events featuring V Team survivors and experts. Let’s all make October a moment of action as we fight breast cancer and support colleagues and loved ones. We’ll be providing more information and relevant links in the coming days.
  • Get your free flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines. This time of year, many of us become exposed to contagious respiratory viruses. One of the easiest ways to protect yourself and your family is by getting vaccinated. It’s simple and effective. U.S. employees: Check out this article to use your benefits.

Date-specific happenings

Customer Service Week: October 2 marks the start of Customer Service week, a chance to celebrate the amazing V Teamers who work tirelessly to deliver for our customers. Make time to share thanks with these hard working V Teamers.

Annual Benefits Enrollment: Annual Enrollment is the only time outside of a qualified life event to review your benefits choices and make changes that support you and your loved ones. 2024 Annual Enrollment for the U.S. takes place October 3-12 for East Associates, and October 17-26 for U.S. management and West associates. Look for your enrollment guide (coming soon for U.S. management and West associates) and tools on BenefitsConnection to reflect on your choices and take action.

Accessibility Summit (Two-day event):

Work Forward Hubs: On October 11 Chief Human Resources Officer Sam Hammock will be on Up To Speed live at 11:30 a.m. ET from Alpharetta, Georgia, to discuss our Work Forward Hubs, be sure to tune in!

Day of the Girl: Also on October 11 at noon ET, Chief Legal Officer Vandana Venkatesh will host an ERG event in Basking Ridge, NJ to celebrate International Day of the Girl, an opportunity to focus on girls’ empowerment and human rights.

BOLD Homecoming: Fall is in the air, which means it’s homecoming season! Our Black Originators, Leaders and Doers (BOLD) ERG is kicking it off with a week of festivities starting on October 16, so be sure to keep an eye out for some exciting ways that you can get involved, we’ll be providing links with more information in the coming days.

World Mental Health Day: On October 10, “Get your 10 on 10.10” and do one thing – under 10 minutes – to strengthen your mental well-being. Join WNO leader Kwame Trotman as he chats with Harvard professor Jeremy Nobel to reflect on loneliness and the importance of staying connected with the people we care about. Details coming soon.
