You can send Rs 2,000 bank notes via post office to RBI office for direct credit into your bank account



The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation in a press release dated May 19, 2023. The deposit and/or exchange of the Rs 2000 banknotes was initially available at all bank branches in the country until September 30, 2023, and was then extended until October 7, 2023.

How to get Rs 2000 notes deposited, exchanged after October 7 deadline

From October 9, 2023, RBI Issue Offices will accept Rs 2000 denomination banknotes for deposit to individual / entity bank accounts in addition to exchanging them across counters.

According to the RBI press release dated November 1, 2023, “Further, members of the public from within the country can send Rs 2000 banknotes through India Post from any post office in the country, to any of the RBI Issue Offices for credit to their bank accounts in India. The format of application for credit into the bank account is enclosed.”

“We encourage customers to send Rs 2,000 notes through the insured post to the RBI for direct credit in their account in the most seamless and secure manner. This (will) save them from the hassle of travelling to specified branches and standing in queue,” RBI Regional Director Rohit P Das told PTI.

How to send Rs 2000 banknotes to RBI Issue office from Post Office

If one needs to send Rs 2000 banknotes through India Post office to RBI issue offices, they have to submit valid documents. Fill the application, enter the details and enclose the documents and sign and submit to India Post.Documents such as Aadhaar Card, Driving License / Voters ID Card / Passport / NREGA Card / PAN Card / Identity card issued by Government Department, Public Sector Unit to its Staff.Details of the bank account

  • IFSC Code.

Note that RBI will not be held liable if account details furnished by me are incorrect and / or account is not fully KYC compliant.

One needs to enclose copy of valid documents, copy of bank account statement (portion with account details) or First page (with account details) of Passbook.
