As we huddled giggling around someone\u2019s family computer, hauled into a bedroom for secrecy, they became a routine part of our childhood sleepovers. One after another, the penises would flash up on screen, as we fell about screaming with laughter, half-covering our eyes with our school jumper sleeves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cEwwww! Next, next!\u201d Someone would click \u201cnext\u201d. The routine began again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">We were not looking for the penises on the now defunct anonymous chat room Omegle, but they would find us nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">It was 2012, and the possibilities of social media still felt new and exciting to young teens like us. The iPhone, Instagram, Tumblr \u2013 all were relatively new inventions. We were children, but we were also the guinea pigs of this burgeoning internet space. It was ours to explore, and our parents \u2013 and politicians \u2013 were none the wiser. They would have been horrified if they\u2019d known who we \u201cmet\u201d on Omegle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">The sole function of Omegle, created in 2009, was to match users at random for one-on-one video chats. \u201cThe internet is full of cool people,\u201d the site\u2019s tagline claimed. \u201cOmegle lets you meet them.\u201d Who exactly you\u2019d meet, however, was a gamble, as users did not have to provide a username or profile picture. You didn\u2019t even need to make an account before you came face-to-face with anyone else, of any age, who also happened to be online at the time, in any part of the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">The anonymity was alluring to us. Sometimes, we would add \u201ctags\u201d to filter the people we matched with by interest: One Direction, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande. According to court documents, sexual predators used the site to encourage children to perform sex acts, to show them pornography, or to lure them into real-life meetings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2022\/11\/the-internet-is-full-of-predators-omegle-lets-you-meet-them\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Mother Jones<\/a> reported last year. One lawsuit against Omegle declared the \u201cmost regular and popular use\u201d of the site was \u201clive sexual activity, such as online masturbation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cWho\u2019s your fave member of 1D?\u201d I remember asking a black screen in an Omegle chat. \u201cTake your top off,\u201d the screen replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">Last week, 14 years after its launch, Omegle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/09\/business\/omegle-shuts-down.html#:~:text=Omegle%2C%20the%20popular%20website%20and,pedophilia%20and%20child%20sexual%20abuse.\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">announced it was shutting down for good<\/a>. The news comes after the company was sued by a woman accusing the site of randomly pairing her with a predator. The $22m <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cagoldberglaw.com\/omegle-sex-trafficking-lawsuit\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">lawsuit<\/a> alleged that when she was 11, she encountered a man on Omegle who coerced her through grooming into three years of \u201csexual servitude\u201d. She is not alone: the site has been mentioned in at least 50 cases against predators in recent years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-67364634\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to the BBC<\/a>. (The woman and Omegle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/omegle-shut-down-offline\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">settled<\/a> in early November.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">The news of Omegle\u2019s closure is prompting some people in my generation to, perhaps for the first time, grapple with who and what they encountered on the site as kids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">Harry* was 14 the first time he used Omegle alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cI used to go on it all the time with my friends at sleepovers \u2013 we\u2019d chat to groups of girls and make crude jokes and stuff,\u201d he told me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">Like many boys his age, Harry had become curious about his sexuality, but he didn\u2019t know who to share his secret with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cI hadn\u2019t even confronted it with myself, really \u2013 I carried a lot of shame about it and wasn\u2019t open at all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cOmegle had a reputation for being a place where you\u2019d see random or shocking things, but also where you\u2019d see loads of naked men masturbating. He was randomly paired with an adult man, who started complimenting his body. \u201cAre you into guys?\u201d the man asked Harry, assuring him it was nothing to be ashamed of. Then the man showed Harry his penis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cHe was asking me if I liked it, and he asked me to do it too,\u201d Harry said. \u201cHe guided me step by step, complimenting me the whole time, and I ended up masturbating in front of the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">It made Harry feel grown up at the time: \u201cIt was almost like I felt like I was in a TV show, doing something really adult and exciting for the first time. Thinking about it, it all felt very much like a script.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cIt\u2019s weird to look back on,\u201d said Harry, now 26. \u201cI hope it hasn\u2019t affected me, like psychologically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">Omegle had 54m monthly visits by January 2021, according to Semrush. \u201cOmg, some of the things I saw on there \u2026\u201d one friend messaged me after it shut down. \u201cTotally forgot about Omegle! Feel like I blocked it out lol. I think a lot more people used it than would like to admit,\u201d said another. \u201cSo. Many. Penises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">Then a message came in from Adam*, a friend of my cousin, who told me that he had seen someone take their own life on Omegle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cI used to go on Omegle just with my mates,\u201d he said. \u201cOver the years using it, I\u2019ve seen two people appearing to self-harm.\u201d He wasn\u2019t sure if the videos were pre-recorded and played on screen or not. \u201cEither way, it\u2019s still really traumatic for anyone to see,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">At 18, Adam is of a generation for whom I assumed Omegle would have been pass\u00e9. But the site actually saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/24\/style\/omegle-random-video-chat.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">surge in popularity<\/a> during the Covid lockdowns, when lonely teenagers sought company from a roulette of strangers online. (So did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/chatroulette-resurrected-as-users-double-under-coronavirus-stay-at-home-orders\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Chatroulette<\/a>, another random video chat site that was founded the same year as Omegle.) It wasn\u2019t until last year that Omegle updated its terms of service, stating that the site was for adults only. Previously, it had allowed children aged 13 and above, as long as they said they had parental supervision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cI don\u2019t remember any kind of parental controls when I used to use it,\u201d said Maddie*, 24. \u201cI went on it all the time with my friends and stuff \u2013 we were like 13 \u2013 and it was just a carousel of penises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cSometimes I\u2019d go on it by myself, if my parents were out. One time, this old man, maybe in his 40s, asked me to show him my bra. I honestly don\u2019t know what was going through my head, but I did it. It was a bizarre contradiction \u2013 sitting in school assemblies while teachers warned of the danger of talking to strangers on the street, or of a \u201cwhite van man\u201d who might be lurking in the area, all while we had direct access to potential predators from our bedrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">In a lengthy closing-down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegle.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">statement<\/a>, Omegle\u2019s founder, Leif K-Brooks, claimed that he had set the site up to fulfill the \u201cbasic human need\u201d of \u201cmeeting new people\u201d, but acknowledged it had been used by some \u201cto commit unspeakably heinous crimes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">\u201cVirtually every tool can be used for good or for evil, and that is especially true of communication tools, due to their innate flexibility,\u201d he said. \u201cThe telephone can be used to wish your grandmother \u2018happy birthday\u2019, but it can also be used to call in a bomb threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">He contended that \u201cthe battle for Omegle has been lost\u201d. In hindsight, it\u2019s hard to see how Omegle could have become anything but a hotbed of abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">It has been over a decade since I last used Omegle. For years, those 12-year-old sleepovers were a distant memory.
