Meanwhile, its thrusters stirred up the particles, clogging up its instruments.<\/p>\n<figure class=\" img-container shareable-item wp-caption\" style=\"max-width:540px\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n<a id=\"share-item-19528112-759\" class=\"anchor\"\/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"274\" data-rsz=\"shrink\" src=\"https:\/\/www.businesstelegraph.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1695594138_332_A-huge-asteroid-is-heading-for-Earth-\u2013-one-way.png\" alt=\"OSIRIS-REx descended onto the surface of Bennu\" class=\"wp-image-19528112\"\/>\n<\/div><figcaption>OSIRIS-REx descended onto the surface of Bennu (Picture: Nasa\/Goddard\/University of Arizona)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">Fortunately, the whole operation lasted only 30 seconds, and the craft was able to float away unscathed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The manoeuvre and previous test runs provided scientists with a surprising insight into the asteroid, which Nasa says has \u2018consistently defied scientists\u2019 expectations\u2019. The surface, instead being relatively solid with a light top layer of dust and debris, behaved more like a fluid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Asteroid Bennu\u2019s Surprising Surface Revealed by NASA Spacecraft\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/42EwbQ3afPA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">An almost complete lack of cohesion, one of the ways particles are held together, meant the surface behaved like a ball pit \u2013 with rocks, dust and debris loosely stacked on top of each other but easily moved by a solid object.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The sample collection, known as a touch-and-go \u2013 or tag \u2013 event, was the highlight of a seven-year-mission to learn more about the asteroid, that on Tuesday, September 24, 2182, has a 1 in 2,700 chance of colliding with Earth.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"post-strip trending-post-strip\" data-nosnippet=\"\" data-vars-type=\"trending-post-strip\" data-track-module=\"trending-post-strip_article\">\n<h3 class=\"zopo-more\">More: <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/trending\/?ico=trending-post-strip_more\">Trending<\/a><br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"\">The odds of it hitting sometime between now and 2300 are even lower at about 1 in 1,750. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In 2135 the asteroid will make a close approach, which scientists who haven\u2019t yet been born will use to understand Bennu\u2019s exact trajectory and how Earth\u2019s gravity will alter the asteroid\u2019s path \u2013 affecting the chances of hitting the planet on another orbit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">For now however, Bennu is set to provide more wonder than worry, as the key to unravelling more of its mysteries parachutes back to Earth today, landing at around 3.55pm UK time.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NASA Live: Official Stream of NASA TV\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/21X5lGlDOfg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">Live coverage of the event will be broadcast on Nasa\u2019s YouTube channel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The space agency caused great excitement in July when a team was <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/07\/25\/nasa-spotted-pulling-saucer-shaped-object-from-us-desert-19190843\/\">spotted collecting a \u2018flying saucer-shaped\u2019 object from the Utah desert<\/a>, but rather than a UFO, it proved to be a rehearsal for recovering the OSIRIS-REx return capsule when it touches down.<\/p>\n<figure class=\" img-container shareable-item wp-caption\" style=\"max-width:540px\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n<a id=\"share-item-19190939-619\" class=\"anchor\"\/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" data-rsz=\"shrink\" src=\"https:\/\/www.businesstelegraph.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/A-huge-asteroid-is-heading-for-Earth-\u2013-one-way.jpg\" alt=\"The Nasa team practises collecting the sample capsule\" class=\"wp-image-19190939\"\/>\n<\/div><figcaption>The Nasa team practises collecting the sample capsule (Picture: Nasa\/Twitter)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">From its landing point in the Department of Defense\u2019s Utah Test and Training Range, 70 miles west of Salt Lake City, the capsule and its samples will be whisked away to Nasa\u2019s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
