Wipro lets go of 452 freshers after failing internal test


Wipro has terminated over 450 trainees after they failed repeatedly in the company’s internal tests.

“We had to let go of 452 freshers after they performed poorly in assessments repeatedly even after training,” the Bengaluru-based IT major said in response to ET’s mail.

Sources close to the development said that the company had spent Rs 75,000 on training each of the candidates but the amount will be waived off.

“At Wipro, we take pride in holding ourselves to the highest standards. In line with the standards we aim to set for ourselves, we expect every entry-level employee to have a certain level of proficiency in their designated area of work. The evaluation process includes assessments to align employees with the business objectives of the organization and requirements of our clients,” Wirpro said in its emailed statement.

The systematic and comprehensive performance evaluation process triggers a series of actions such as mentoring and retraining and in some cases separation of certain employees from the company, it added.

The company had, late last year, terminated around 300 employees for working for rival firms while still being on the company’s payroll.

Last week, India’s fourth largest IT firm reported its results. Wipro posted a 2.8% growth in net profit for the fiscal third quarter, beating estimates, but the IT services major warned that the sector was slowing down amidst a challenging macroeconomic environment. Revenue came in at Rs 23,229 crore, up 14.4% year on year. ET’s poll of analysts had pegged net profit to remain flat compared with the same quarter last year, on revenue of Rs 23,422 crore, up 15.3%.
