Hughes becomes first Lion to earn a weekly honor for the Lions this season
PRINCETON, N.J. — Senior punter William Hughes was named Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week after a strong performance in a win over Marist Saturday. This is the first time Hughes has picked up a conference weekly award and the first Lion to earn Special Teams Player of the Week since Alex Felkins did so in September 2022.
Hughes, who earned second team All-Ivy League honors last season, averaged 46.8 yards on four attempts in rainy and windy conditions against the Red Foxes. Two were downed inside the Marist 20 and he limited the Red Foxes to just a pair of one-yard returns.
Additionally, the native of Halifax, Virginia, boomed a career-long, 71-yard punt to pin Marist at its own 9 yard line in the third quarter. The kick is tied for the fifth longest in program history. For the season, Hughes is leads the Ivy League and ranks No. 3 in the country in punting average (45.7 yards per kick).
The Lions remain home to take on Penn next Saturday, October 14, at Robert K. Kraft Field at Wien Stadium in their Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. on SNY and ESPN+.
