Your birthday can be a great time to get free treats from restaurants and retailers.
Birthday freebies cut across many categories, but the most popular is food, with many restaurants, ice cream shops and coffeehouses offering gifts, said Kimberly Palmer, personal finance expert at NerdWallet.
To take advantage of the promotions, you’ll have to hand over your email address and information by signing up for rewards programs ahead of your birthday.
“It’s basically their way of thanking you for sharing your information with them,” Palmer said.
You can avoid a cluttered inbox by creating a separate folder for promotions, but make sure to check it so you don’t on the birthday deal. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a flood of emails, you can set up an entirely separate account just for promotions, Palmer said.
When you collect your freebie, keep in mind that birthday promotions often entice consumers to overspend, Palmer said.
“If you get a freebie and that’s all you want,” Palmer said, “you just have to think to yourself to be on guard against extra temptations to spend more at the last minute.”
