It’s World Wildlife Day! A time to celebrate all the weird and wonderful creatures that make Earth wonderful and weird (although we should really be doing that every day).
It has taken literally millions of years to get to the incredible level of biodiversity we see across the continents and throughout the seas today.
But what if we tried to create the same animals from scratch? That was the challenge we put to OpenAI’s Dall: E2, feeding it simple descriptions of common animals without specifically naming them to see how it imagined they looked.
The results are… interesting.
Some are almost impossible to distinguish from the real thing – although like Dall: E’s seven-fingered house party guests who freaked out the internet earlier this year, digits still appear to be tricky. Others clearly needed a little more description to narrow down the animal family to which they belonged.
And then, the platypus. Well, the less said the better – but let it serve as a reminder that no AI can produce better, more beautiful animals than already roam the planet, so let’s take good care of them…
