Watch out Samsung! There's a smart new way to watch TV and it's surprisingly cheap

Fancy a new TV for a quick boxset binge? Currys reckons it has the perfect purchase thanks to the launch of new JVC screens that are powered by streaming firm Roku. These latest goggleboxes – which come in four sizes – include full access to a swathe of premium platforms including Disney+, Netflix, Apple TV+ and Prime Video with all of these apps easily accessible via the home screen.

That means you don’t need any extra set-top boxes or dongles sticking out of the telly to watch shows such as Ted Lasso, Drive to Survive, Clarkson’s Farm and all the action from the Marvel movies.

If you don’t want to pay for shows and movies, you’ll also find plenty of free things thanks to apps such as YouTube, Freeview Play and BBC iPlayer.

Another bonus of buying one of these JVC Roku TV models is that they come with a 30-day free trial of ITVX Premium. With that service added you can enjoy upcoming shows including Big Brother, Archie and The Winter King all ad-free and on-demand, alongside all BritBox UK content.

As we’ve already mentioned, these tellies get Roku’s software pre-installed and are designed to put users in control with a simple and customisable home screen.

There’s also Roku Search baked in making it simple to discover shows across all of the most popular streaming apps. You’ll even be shown which content is free to view as part of your subscriptions and what content you’ll have to pay to view.

A smart remote ships in the box and features quick buttons for one-touch access to apps such as Netflix and Freeview Play.

If that sounds enticing there’s more good news, pricing for these screens starts from as little as £169.99 – that’s for the 24-inch model

The 32-inch screen costs £249.99, then there’s a 40-inch model for £299.99 and a 43-inch for £329.99.

As a quick comparison, the cheaper Samsung TVs start from around £200.

“The Roku OS delivers a smart TV experience like no other, with features that make it easier, faster, and more affordable for consumers to watch what they love,” said Bart Bomers, VP EMEA at Roku. “It is not without reason that Roku is the #1 TV streaming platform by hours streamed in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and our partnership with Currys extends our commitment to bringing our popular platform to more people in the U.K.”

The full HD JVC Roku TV models are available in Currys stores from today.
