Volleyball: Nevis sweeps past W-H-A, Sebeka – Park Rapids Enterprise


NEVIS – Kayli Bessler’s 21 kills powered the Nevis volleyball team to a 3-0 Northland Conference sweep over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley at the Tiger Arena on Thursday, Sept. 28.

Mya Stacey and Marley Mitchell served three aces each in the 27-25, 25-19, 25-15 victory.

Four kills by Bessler, two ace serves by Stacey and two kills by Ava Forbes had Set 1 tied at 13-13. Three more kills by Bessler and an ace serve by Mitchell gave Nevis a 21-18 lead before the Wolves rallied to tie it at 25-25. Kills by Mitchell and Forbes closed out that set.

Two kills apiece by Bessler and Mitchell gave the Tigers an 11-8 lead in Set 2. A kill by Lyra Luebbert and an ace serve by Forbes made it 18-14 before three kills by Bessler and a kill by Mitchell ended that set.

After a kill and a block by Forbes and an ace serve by Mitchell gave Nevis a 3-1 lead to start Set 3, Forbes served seven straight points as three kills by Bessler pushed the lead to 10-1. Three more kills by Bessler and a pair of kills and an ace serve by Mitchell made it 18-9 before two kills and an ace serve by Bessler and a kill by Mitchell ended the match.

Stacey set up 40 kills while Bessler (12) and Mitchell (10) had double figures in digs as the Tigers had 43 kills with 16 hitting errors in improving to 5-0 in the conference and 15-5 overall. W-H-A fell to 3-1 in conference matches and 5-7 overall.

SEBEKA – Bessler’s 23 kills and Nevaeh Hollingsworth’s four ace serves led the Tigers to a 3-0 sweep over Sebeka in a match between Section 5A West opponents on Sept. 24.

Stacey’s 44 set assists, Bessler’s 14 digs and Clair Isaacson’s 10 digs sparked the 25-15, 25-17, 25-10 victory.

Bessler had seven kills and Mitchell had five kills in Set 1, Bessler’s eight kills and ace serve and Isaacson’s two ace serves led the Tigers in Set 2 while Bessler’s eight kills, Hollingsworth’s four ace serves, Mitchell’s two kills and ace serve, and Forbes’ three kills paved the way in Set 3.

The Tigers had 50 kills with only nine hitting errors to improve to 4-0 against section opponents. Sebeka fell to 2-2 in section matches and 8-7 overall.
