US And UK express 'deep concern' over Canada's allegations

The US, Australia and the UK, three close allies of Canada and members of Five Eyes (coalition of intelligence mechanism between five countries), have expressed deep concerns over allegations levelled by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

While Canada said it had raised the matter with France, it is unlikely that Paris will raise the matter with India or issue a statement.

The US expressed concern at the allegations and said it is critical for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. “We are deeply concerned about the allegations referenced by Prime Minister Trudeau,” White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a brief statement.

A spokesperson for Australia’s foreign minister Penny Wong said Canberra’s concerns had been conveyed to New Delhi at “senior levels”.

“Australia is deeply concerned by these allegations and notes ongoing investigations into this matter,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Australia believes all countries should respect sovereignty and the rule of law.”

The spokesperson said, “We are closely engaged with partners on the developments. We have conveyed our concerns at senior levels to India.”Australia is also home to a large Sikh population and there have been growing incidents of radical acts by a section of the Sikhs. Earlier this year, India raised with Australia to act against the Sikh radicals. However, Australian PM Anthony Albanese has told a reporter to “chill out” after he was asked about the Australian foreign ministry expressing concerns over the killing.

Meanwhile, the UK government spokesperson said on Tuesday that Britain is in close touch with its Canadian partners about ‘serious allegations’ from Ottawa that the Indian government was involved with the Khalistani terrorist. It may be recalled that earlier this year, livid with the UK’s inaction against the Khalistani terrorists who targeted the Indian diplomatic mission, India had reduced security cover for the British High Commission here.
