Updated 2024 BMW 4 Series spied in coupe, convertible and M4 forms

BMW is readying a mid-life update for its 4 Series range with updates due right across the coupe, convertible, Gran Coupe and high performance M4 lineup. Expected to integrate a selection of styling and tech tweaks, it’ll mirror the changes applied to the 3 Series last year.

Key among these will be the arrival of BMW’s new dashboard that’s already available in the 2- and 3 Series models. This sees the two separate screens integrated into one floating, curved housing, incorporating a 14.9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver’s display. Integrating BMW’s latest interface doesn’t just give more digital real estate to 4 Series drivers, but also integrates the heating and ventilation controls.

The next 4 Series will also pick up the slimmed down dash, with simplified controls and a new switch-style gear selector on all models except the M4 coupe and convertibles, which will retain the existing M-specific joystick.

In addition to the updated interior, the exterior design is also expected to be changed with new front and rear lighting and bumpers. The headlights in particular will feature BMW’s latest upside-down ‘L’ signatures, while the rear lights will take inspiration from the ‘laser’ units featured on the M4 CSL. As with most mid-cycle updates, we expect a range of new colour and wheel options to debut.

BMW isn’t expected to amend the existing 4 Series engine line up, with coupe and convertible models likely to retain their pure combustion and mild-hybrid four- and six-cylinder engines. The four-door Gran Coupe will be the only model to offer an all-electric variant in the form of an updated i4, but none will integrate the 330e’s popular plug-in hybrid system.

The top-spec M4 Competition coupe and convertible will top the refreshed range with changes limited to the lighting and colour and trim options. They’ll continue to feature an ultra-high performance twin-turbocharged straight-six engine producing 503bhp, and also feature two- or four-wheel drive options, with the convertible exclusively fitted with the latter.

We’ll be sure to find out more in the next few months, with a market launch likely for the latter half of this year, completing the refresh of the 3 and 4 Series in their current ‘G’ generation.
