TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – Following the recent SFA cyber attack, forensic computer and cell phone expert, Tim McLemee talks about ransomware cases and what you should do to protect yourself.
“Without even talking to anybody at SFA, I’m quite confident they probably received a lockout screen. And once you receive a lockout screen, you’ve already been had.” said McLemee.
He says hackers will usually give you a timeline to pay the ransom. but if you choose to ignore, “They will publish your data that they stole. So I come in after the breach and deal with the actually communicating with the individuals in foreign countries on behalf of the victim.”
Finding someone to speak on your behalf is essential. McLemee also says IT departments may be able to restore operations, but it still is not enough to solve the problem.
“And the best thing they can do, about the only way to fix this right now, is they need to be dealing with these LifeLock companies and provide it at no charge with free credit checks to anybody that potentially lost their data.”
But if you are able to notice the signs of a potential cyberattack early on, “You need to stop everything that you’re doing in life. Find, call your IT department have them on standby. Do not touch that computer or machine and you need to reach out for help from people who know what they are doing.”
McLemee says to also be aware of spoof emails that may look real because they may contain unsafe links leading to the hackers.
