Top Russian scientist rushed to hospital after Luna-25 crashed into Moon

Top scientist working for the Luna-25 mission was hospitalised following a “sharp deterioration” in his health condition after the spacecraft spun out of control and crashed into the moon, reported Independent.

”I’m under observation. How can I not worry, this is largely a matter of life. It’s all very hard,” said Mikhail Marov, aged 90, to the reporters at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow.

While speaking to Russian news media, news channel RBC and the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper, the scientist claimed that he was hospitalised due to the failure of the space mission.

The scientist had worked on previous space missions for the Soviet Union and called the Luna-25 mission the culmination of his life’s work.

He told the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper that he hoped the reasons behind the crash would be discussed and examined rigorously.

According to the Russian space agency, the lunar probe was to get into the landing orbit after a thrust for descend but due to deviation in its path, it entered into an undesignated orbit.Meanwhile, the agency is further ascertaining the possible causes of the crash. The lunar mission was Russia’s first since 1976, when it was part of the Soviet Union. Only three governments have managed successful moon landings: the Soviet Union, the United States and China.

At present, eyes are sent on India’s Chandrayaan-3 as it is set to land on the moon surface on August 23, 2023. Previous attempts to land at the South Pole by India in 2019 ended when the spacecraft crashed into the moon’s surface.

The Luna-25 was initially meant to carry a small moon rover, but that idea was abandoned to reduce the weight of the craft for improved reliability, analysts said.

The craft launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia’s Far East on Aug. 10. The spaceport is a pet project of Russian President Vladimir Putin and key to his efforts to make Russia a space superpower.
