Tomato prices at Mother Dairy's Safal stores nearly double in a week

Tomato prices at Mother Dairy‘s Safal outlets have gone up by nearly two times in the past one week.

The price spike follows rain-induced supply disruptions in key tomato producing states.

The best quality tomatoes at Safal store were being retailed at Rs 78 per kg on Tuesday. Some of the varieties are available at lower rates as well.

The Delhi-NCR market has over 300 Safal stores.

A Mother Dairy spokesperson said, “With the onset of monsoon, the tomato crop is currently going through a seasonal transition. Rainfall in areas such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have impacted the crop and also restricted its supply, resulting in a demand-supply gap.”

Vegetable vendors in the national capital are selling tomatoes between Rs 80-120 per kg, depending on the location and quality, news agency PTI reported. As for online retailing, agritech startup Otipy is selling tomatoes at Rs 86 per kg, while prices are between Rs 80 and 85 per kg on e-commerce platform Big Basket. The prices were at Rs 25-30 per kg around June 15, before rising gradually to Rs 40, then Rs 60 and finally the current high rates.

The prices at Azadpur, India’s biggest wholesale market for fruits and vegetables, have risen sharply, PTI reported quoting a vendor.

Tomato production is seen falling slightly to 20.62 million tonnes in 2022-23, from 20.69 million tonnes in the previous year, govt data says.
