Tinder announced a $499 (£407) per month invite-only subscription called ‘Tinder Select’ this week and people are not happy about it.
The popular dating app’s new premium membership tier will allow members to message other profiles without needing to match with them first.
This feature has caused concern about putting women at risk of harassment, with people taking to social media to point out that it essentially removes consent from the user experience.
‘Because the “I saw you on tinder, we didn’t match but I wanna take you out” dm’s on Instagram weren’t bad enough,’ posted one user on X, referring to men stalking and messaging the social media of women who unmatch them on dating apps.
Some have argued that it creates an open field for harassment and even stalking.
Tinder says it only offers the plan to less than 1 percent of its users it considers ‘extremely active’ and that the applications will open up on a rolling basis.
At £405 a month, the service will cost an eye-watering cool £4860 a year. Definitely not a small price to pay for love.
Members will only be able to use this feature to send unsolicited messages twice a week.
While this provides some limits to prevent harrasment, social media users still believe it’s an unecessary and expensive service.
