Tight Security In Place For Safe Polling In Maoist-hit Bastar | Raipur … – Times of India

RAIPUR: Comprehensive security measures have been put in place in the Maoist affected constituencies, encompassing deployment of central paramilitary forces, special police units, and various high-tech surveillance techniques, going to polls in the first phase of election on November 7.
Inspector general of police (Bastar range) Sunderraj P said central paramilitary forces and special units such as the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) COBRA, and local forces like the Bastar Fighters will be stationed at polling the centers to manage and secure the routes leading to these centers.Additionally, neighboring states, including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Odisha, are contributing their special forces to guard the border regions.
For areas with a high sensitivity to Naxal activities, over 600 polling centers will be enclosed within a three-tiered security cordon, ensuring maximum protection for voters and election officials. The security arrangements are in strict adherence to the Election Commission’s standards.
Women commandos will play a pivotal role in maintaining order and security within the Bastar region, with at least five polling centers in each district overseen by them. The use of advanced technology, such as drones and helicopters, will be instrumental in monitoring Maoist activities and ensuring the safety of polling process.
To deal with potential threats, specialized units like the Bomb Disposal Unit and the Dog Squad will be on hand to swiftly respond to any suspicious objects or activities. Moreover, more than 156 polling center teams located in remote areas will be reached by helicopters, facilitating quick and efficient communication and response.
To enhance security, 149 polling centers in Bijapur, Narayanpur, Antagarh, Dantewada, and Konta have been shifted nearer to police stations and security camps. This precautionary measure aims to safeguard both voters and election officials. This practice has been in effect since the 2018 State Assembly Elections and the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections when 196 and 330 polling centers were similarly relocated for security reasons.
In 2023, a total of 126 new polling centers were established in over 156 locations. Among these, 40 polling centers, including Minpa, Galgam, Silger, and Chandameta, are being relocated to their original villages due to the improved security atmosphere.
