Thomson Computing, Sahasra Group partner to manufacture laptops & tablets in India

French electronics major Thomson Computing (METAVISIO) launched its laptops and tablets via a Make in India (MII) manufacturing partnership with Sahasra Group in Delhi on Thursday. This partnership aims to leverage the benefits of the PLI scheme, contributing to the ‘Make in India’ initiative by fostering local manufacturing.

Speaking on the launch, Amrit Manwani, CMD, Sahasra Group said that they have an ambitious plan lined up in the next few years. “In the next 5-6 years, we have an ambitious target of 1 billion euro of business which translates to Rs 10,000 cr per year. I am sure it will be achievable. This includes both domestic and export combined.”

The production will take place in Sahasra’s Noida and Rajasthan facilities and is expected to be available by January/February next year.

This collaboration with Saharsa Electronics will streamline the MII production of Thomson’s Computers range of laptops and tablets, catering to the diverse demands of consumers, including the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector, Education, and public sector.

One of Thomson’s focus is on customers seeking products within the sub-25K price range, with a starting price of Rs 19,990 for laptops up to a premium range of products with price of Rs 99,990, and a strong emphasis on serving customers in rural areas. Additionally, the brand aims to attract metro customers looking for a second or third laptop. The tablet range starts from 12,990 onwards, providing affordable options for consumers.

“I have been immersed in the world of Thomson since my childhood as my father worked for 40 years in this company. And I have been working in the IT industry for 30 years. Deciding to take on this challenge to promote this familiar brand in the commercial sector that I know best was a natural choice. India is a fabulous country that is undergoing a skyrocketed evolution,” Stéphan Francais, President and CEO of Thomson Computing. He added that after Covid, a lot of countries were keen to be independent of China but it has not been easy for most countries. “Only one country can compete with China and that is India. The idea was to come to India and to get the market share. And as India is also pushing the Make In India concept, we thought it was interesting to go ahead – that is how we decided to partner with Sahasra,” he stated. Thomson Computing has chosen 3 distributors to address key markets. It has partnered with ANA Business Ventures for government and enterprise business; Digital Compusystems for its retail (offline) stores and with other key players for ecommerce platforms.
