Britons can be paid not to use as much electricity this very evening if they are signed up with a supplier taking part in the Demand Flexibility Service (DFS).
Customers looking to save cash through the scheme must also have a working smart meter installed at the property.
The DFS will be activated on December 1 between 4.30pm and 6pm after it was also used earlier this week as Britain battled freezing temperatures.
Tha National Grid scheme pays people not to use energy-guzzling appliances including washing machines and ovens during that time period.
It is at the discretion of the supplier as to whether customers will be paid in cash.
Energy users could be paid in the form of credit added to the account they hold with their supplier, or money could be taken off future bills.
Suppliers will let customers know in the form of an email or a text message when saving sessions are coming up so that people can plan ahead.
National Grid tweeted yesterday: “Our forecasts show electricity supply margins are expected to be tighter than normal on Friday evening. We are activating a Live Demand Flexibility Service event between 16:30-18.00 tomorrow.
“It does not mean electricity supplies are at risk and people should not be worried. These are precautionary measures to maintain the buffer of spare capacity we need.”
Energy firms will be paid £3 to £6 for every unit of electricity that they save during a DFS event and it is then up to the supplier to pass their savings down to their customers.
The Demand Flexibility Service is set to run until October 2024. The full list of suppliers taking part this evening is below.
