‘The Great’: Hulu cancels series after three seasons. Here’s all you need to know

Streaming platform Hulu has officially announced that “The Great” will not be returning for a fourth season. The show, which humorously reimagined the story of Catherine The Great, portrayed her as an optimistic young woman sent to Russia for an arranged marriage with the unpredictable Emperor Peter. The plot follows her journey as she attempts to bring about change in a corrupt and regressive world, involving tasks like eliminating her husband, challenging the church, outsmarting the military, and gaining the support of the court.

Starring Elle Fanning as Catherine, along with Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow, the series gained a dedicated audience.

The third season, released on May 12, continued the story by depicting Catherine and Peter (played by Hoult) agreeing to mend their relationship after Catherine’s previous actions of imprisoning Peter’s friends and attempting his murder. The season also focused on Catherine’s struggle to win over the Russian people, while Peter dealt with personal struggles and memories of his late father (Jason Isaacs).

Created, written, and executive produced by Tony McNamara, the show was co-executive produced by Elle Fanning, alongside Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Brittany Kahan Ward from Echo Lake, Doug Mankoff, Andrew Spaulding, Ron West, and Josh Kesselman from Thruline. The production was a collaboration between Civic Center Media and MRC Television.
