Adding a smart doorbell to your home could add to your security and save you answering the door every time someone rings, but there’s plenty more to know before having one installed.
Smart doorbell’s camera and audio functions allow you to check who’s at the door, let the postman know where to drop something when you’re not in and alert you if an intruder is snooping around.
Adrian is joined by Belfast Telegraph technology columnist Kurtis Reid to discuss what smart doorbells can do, how you can optimise them for your needs – and how they might present privacy concerns.
“It’s perfectly legitimate to have concerns around buying, with the amount of CCTV and the amount of footage being captured, ultimately in an area where it’s supposed to be private,” Kurtis explains
“You don’t want to feel like your neighbour is recording a conversation that you’re having with your spouse in your driveway. That’s a concern that legitimately people have.”
Between installation and subscription services, it’s not quite as simple as just sticking a new bell at the front door.
“If you purchase a Ring doorbell specifically from Amazon, you will have to pay a subscription. The subscription includes things like cloud space, the ability to record your audio, store your audio, store your video footage,” Kurtis says.
There are both rechargeable and wired options available, making the installation process
“If you think it’s just going to be very easy to put on your door and you purchase a wired option, you are going to have to physically install that doorbell into a doorbell system you hopefully already have.
“Otherwise, it’s going to be very, very complicated,” Kurtis says.
