The 25-year-old tennis player was playing a first-round match when the incident happened. He was competing at the tournament as defending champion.
Bublik lost the first set surprisingly, but managed to bounce back to take the match against Barrere to a third set.
In the third set, Bublik, who is the world number 50, reached 4-2. But then, things began to unravel for the sixth seed.
Bublik committed three double faults in the tiebreak and fell 6-0 behind. At this moment, his composure failed him. He went on to smash his racquet five times on the court.
The tennis player then walked to his bag to take out another racquet and began to smash it on the floor. As if this was not enough, he went on to grab another racquet, which met the same fate. Bublik was also obviously warned about racquet abuse.
Bublik could not defend his title as he lost the match to Barrere, who advanced to the second round with a 6-4 6-7 (12) 7-6 (3) victory. Bublik’s 14 double faults proved costly and brought his title defense to an early end.FAQs
