Many of Starfield’s skills are only really useful for certain builds. Security skills are so universally useful that working on them is recommended for virtually every build. That’s because much of the best loot in the game will be locked away, available only to those highly skilled in Security.
Digital locks can be found all across the Settled Systems on physical containers, doors, and even computers. Developing your Security skill will let you crack tougher locks and make the whole system easier overall. Here’s how you can work up each rank of the Security skill in Starfield.
How To Unlock Each Security Skill Rank
Unlocking the first rank of Security is super easy. It’s one of the basic Tech skills, meaning you can choose it right away on your first level up. Some character backgrounds even have Security as one of their primary starting skills:
- Bouncer: Security, Boxing, and Fitness
- Cyber Runner: Security, Stealth, and Theft
- Cyberneticist: Security, Medicine, and Lasers
- Industrialist: Security, Persuasion, and Research Methods
After unlocking the first rank of Security, you’ll need to pick 10 locks in order to get enough challenge progress to access Security rank 2. However, you’ll still need to spend another skill point to actually rank up your Security.
Once you unlock Security rank 2, you’ll need to pick 20 locks to get to rank 3. Spend another skill point, and then pick 30 locks to reach the final rank of the Security skill. It may seem like a very time-consuming process from the outset. However, Starfield is absolutely full of locks to pick, making this one of the easier skills to work on.
Security Skills And What They Do
Anybody can attempt to pick a Novice lock on Starfield, so long as they have digipicks available. Anyone can make an auto attempt to complete the lock’s puzzle without actually doing it. Once you get Security rank 1, you can start to pick Advanced locks. Even better, you’ll get a second auto attempt.
Security rank 2 unlocks access to Expert locks and provides a third auto attempt. Best of all, the rings will now turn blue whenever you select keys that are appropriate for those rings. No more using keys that you should’ve saved for the inner rings!
Upgrading to Security rank 3 will let you pick Master locks, and you’ll get a fourth auto attempt. With this skill, you can pick any lock in the game which doesn’t specifically require a key. Security rank 4 is definitely worth investing one more skill point. In addition to five auto attempts, you can use another digipick to eliminate all the keys that aren’t required for that particular puzzle.
