Some Freeview users get a great free content boost – check your TV now

Just in time for the festive period, some Freeview users are being offered a content-packed upgrade. The boost comes courtesy of The GREAT! Network with this platform launching its very own video-on-demand service called the GREAT! Player. This update will allow users to tune into a swathe of shows and star-studded Hollywood movies whenever they like rather than waiting for things to appear via the daily planner.

“With a selection of movies, fast-paced action films, love stories and nostalgic series, viewers can catch-up on missed content or dive into a catalogue featuring hundreds of hours of specially curated content from the popular GREAT! Network TV channels anytime they like, for free!,” GREAT! explained.

Shows and films available at launch include A Rainy Day In New York, Only God Forgives, Logan Lucky and classic series M*A*S*H.

As we mentioned earlier, this update doesn’t come via your aerial with content beamed to your screen via the web instead.

That means to access the GREAT! Player you’ll need a TV or set-top that features the Freeview Play. If you have that already you should find this service becoming available in the next few days.

What is Freeview Play?

For those not aware, Freeview Play launched back in 2015 and is host to more than 70 standard and a selection of HD live channels.

There are also 30 radio stations and 12 on-demand players as well including BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5, UKTV Play and the latest addition of S4C Clic.

Those accessing the service will find around 60,000 hours of on-demand content to watch along with over 1,250 box sets.

Most modern smart TVs have the Freeview Play app and it’s also available via a number of set-top boxes.

Along with this GREAT! upgrade, Freeview users have also just been treated to another bunch of changes including the launch of two new channels on the service including one dedicated to children’s content.

The new Moochi channel features back-to-back animation aimed at the younger members of the family with shows including Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Secret Museum, Jamie’s Got Tentacles and Misho and Robin all available at launch. Alongside that kid’s update, there’s also the introduction of something called TV Extra which is dedicated to creative and craft shopping.
