Sky TV users must accept free upgrade or lose popular channels this month

Sky customers are being urged to check their set-top box and make sure it’s ready for a major change coming from the BBC. Later this month a swathe of Standard Definition (SD) channels broadcast over satellite signals are being switched off which means anyone with an ageing Sky box will find they can no longer tune in.

Services including BBC One SD, BBC Two SD and BBC Three SD are all affected which is why there’s such an urgency to take action.

“We are days away from the day when we will be closing the SD versions of all our TV channels on satellite – the closedown will take place on 8th January 2024,” said the BBC in a post on its website.

“There is no need to wait until the 8th of January 2024 to get an HD-enabled set-top box so you can continue to watch BBC services (plus with the added benefit of improved picture and audio quality.) There are a variety of options available. Sky are also offering equipment upgrade packages to any paying Sky customers with an active subscription.”

If you think you have an old Sky SD box don’t panic. Sky has confirmed that all customers will be able to upgrade to Sky Q for free. All they have to do is upgrade online or call this number 0333 759 5121.

“Sky TV customers can upgrade to Sky Q at no extra cost. Upgrade online, or call – we’d advise doing this as soon as possible to avoid long wait times. Your new box will be installed by one of our engineers on a date that suits you. You can then watch all the BBC channels in HD – including all local programmes.”

It’s worth noting that some older Freesat boxes are also affected by the closure so anyone using that free service would also be wise to check their equipment.
