SWEAT, dust and body oils can turn mattresses yellow and smelly over time.
But save on replacing bedding with nifty cleaning tricks.
Here’s how to turn an old mattress from a nightmare into a fresh sleep haven . . .
BAKING SODA: Strip bedding and vacuum the mattress to remove dust and dirt.
Kelly Collins, interior designer at furniture maker Swyft, recommends generously sprinkle baking soda over the mattress with a sieve.
She says: “Baking soda can act as a good, natural cleaning solution that removes smells.”
Leave for at least 30 minutes — a couple of hours is best — then vacuum thoroughly.
LEMON JUICE: If you have yellow stains on the mattress, try using a lemon to tackle the discolouration.
Kelly says: “Lemon juice will lighten the yellow stain.”
She recommends leaving the juice to work its magic on the stain for an hour before blotting away with water.
FABRIC CLEANER: Tackle tougher stains on your mattress with soapy water or a fabric cleaner.
Blot at the blemish, rather than rubbing which can deepen it, says Kelly.
Dr Beckmann upholstery stain remover is great for stubborn marks – it’s £2.99 at the onlinepoundstore.co.uk.
SUNLIGHT: Open the curtains wide and air your mattress in sunlight.
The sun will help natural stains disappear and act as a natural disinfectant.
If the mattress is damp from cleaning, it will also help dry it — which is important to prevent mould.
MATTRESS TOPPER: Using a mattress protector beneath your sheets is an easy way to help protect the bed.
A single protector is £3.50 at Ikea. Or the Silentnight double easy care mattress protector is £8 at Argos.
You can also look after your mattress and prolong its life by rotating it every few months and airing it regularly.
