Seemingly healthy breakfast could cause tummy troubles and bloating

Abbas Kanani, the pharmacist at Chemist Click, said: “There are a few things to consider when combining yoghurt with fruit.

“Although it is generally considered a healthy practice, digestive discomfort can occur when combining citrus fruits and yoghurt because of the high acidic content found in these types of fruits.”

Kanani elaborated: “You should monitor how your body reacts to this combination if you have a sensitive stomach or digestive issues.

“Some people might experience gas or bloating when consuming fruit and yoghurt together, but this can vary from person to person.”

Kanani advised: “Like with all food choices, it’s best to listen to your body and make appropriate choices.”

If you do suffer from gut issues when consuming yoghurt and fruits, it’s likely due to lactose intolerance.

Lactose is a sugar found in dairy products, such as yoghurt, which some people may be intolerant towards.

Signs of lactose intolerance include tummy discomfort, boating, farting, diarrhoea, constipation or nausea after consuming foods or drink containing lactose.

If your stomach isn’t upset by the combination of yoghurt and fruits, it can be a really healthy breakfast.

Greek yoghurt contains numerous nutrients, from vitamin B12 to calcium and iodine.

Dietitian Natalie Olsen verified Greek yoghurt may improve bone health, improve blood pressure, and reduce the risk of diabetes.

Fruits to add to the Greek yoghurt can vary from blueberries to strawberries, and bananas.

The NHS recommends everybody to eat at least five portions of fruit and veg daily.

Thus, by eating a handful of different fruits first thing in the morning, you are already on your way to reaching that target.

Nutritionist Kathy Warwick confirmed that bananas are rich in potassium, which means that it can help to keep the heart beating regularly.

Fruits are usually low in calories, the NHS points out, so they’re a good addition when you’re trying to maintain or achieve a healthy weight.
