Security guard shot and killed after catching people breaking into cars in Midtown – Atlanta News First

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A security guard is dead after police say people breaking into cars in a Midtown parking garage started shooting “indiscriminately” early Monday morning.

Atlanta Police say it happened around 2 a.m. at the 725 parking deck at Spring Street and 3rd Street.

“Tech square is just down the block and that’s The Standard and they’re considered students housing so yeah, this is a very student concentrated area,” said Georgia Tech Grad Student Summer Ligon.

Investigators believe the people who were caught breaking into cars started to leave the scene after they noticed the security guard, but not before firing shots randomly into the parking garage, striking and killing the victim.

“My car actually has gotten broken into in Atlanta but this was someone just got shot a block down from where I live. That’s very scary,” said Ligon.

Investigators said the security guard was an innocent bystander.

“We’re taken aback just by the incident. the homicide unit and the Atlanta police department is going to take this very seriously and we’re going to work to identify the suspects involved to get them in custody and off our streets,” said Lt. Germain Deerlove.

Police are now talking to witnesses and have a portion of 3rd Street closed as they investigate.
