Some local security companies say they’re seeing an uptick in business.

This comes as mass shootings and other tragic events increase across the country.

For some people, it takes seeing a tragedy on the screen for them to want to better protect themselves.

But how they’ve requested it comes in many different forms.

147 mass shootings have occurred in the United States in 2023 according to the ‘Gun Violence Archive.’

That includes Monday’s shooting in Louisville and the Nashville school shooting from the end of March.

Larry Weaver, Branch Manager at FSS Technologies says there’s been more requests for security within the last year.

“I’m sure some of it has to do with the shootings. There’s a lot more safety officers than there used to be that I’m dealing with rather than just purchasing agent or somebody like that,” said Weaver.

Specifically, he’s seen an 80% increase in access control inquiries from churches, schools, businesses, and libraries.

That’s the technology that keeps a building locked at all hours and allows access only with credentials.

Weaver says he gets calls for that technology daily.

“They want control of who’s coming inside their facilities, that’s the access control side. The camera-side is to protect the outside of the facility so they can see what’s going on, if there’s anything happening and more and more people are putting cameras inside,” said Weaver.

Derek Dieter with Dieter Security also sees an increase in requests for active shooter training after tragic national events.

“Unfortunately, it goes in cycles. When something happens, everybody wants to know what they can do, how much they should train,” said Derek Dieter, Dieter Security CEO.

He says some businesses shy away from the cost after getting an estimate.

“Not just for my business, but businesses in general… I recommend that people go wherever you live and get estimates and find the people you would want to train you because if you don’t, unfortunately stuff happens,” said Dieter.

If you have technology that keeps strangers out, Dieter says you’re already ahead of the game.

But coming up with a plan if someone does get in, could save your life.
