Sebi stress test: Top mutual funds reveal how long can it take to liquidate portfolios



Mutual fund (MF) houses have started releasing a Sebi stress test report, mentioning the number of days they will require to liquidate 50% and 25% of their mid-and-small-cap schemes portfolio. This move came after the market regulator asked MFs to frame a policy to protect investor interest during the market crash and redemptions.

Nippon India Small Cap, the largest scheme in the smallcap category based on assets managed, will take 27 days to liquidate 50% portfolio, while Quantum Smallcap Fund, the smallest scheme in the smallcap category, will be able to liquidate 100% of its portfolio holdings in one day.

SBI Mutual Fund

SBI Mutual Fund released its stress test report stating that its smallcap fund will take 60 days to liquidate its 50% portfolio and 30 days to liquidate 25% of its portfolio. SBI Mid Cap Fund will take 24 days to liquidate 50% portfolio and 12 days to liquidate 25%.

The total percentage of AUM held by the top 10 investors in the midcap scheme is 1.66%, whereas for the smallcap scheme it is 0.61%. The portfolio turnover ratio of mid-and-small-cap schemes is 0.14 and 1.05, respectively.

SBI Mid Cap Fund manages assets worth Rs 16,467 crore, while SBI Small Cap Fund handles Rs 25,533 crore as of February 2024.

HDFC Mutual Fund

HDFC Mid-Cap Opportunities Fund, the largest scheme in the mid-cap category based on assets managed, will take 23 days to liquidate 50% of the portfolio and 12 days to liquidate 25% of the portfolio.

HDFC Small Cap Fund will take 42 days to liquidate 50% and 21 days to liquidate 25% of its portfolio.

The portfolio turnover ratio of the midcap scheme is 19.31% and for the smallcap scheme is 8.72%.

The top 10 investors as a percentage of AUM in the midcap scheme are 1.41% and in the smallcap scheme is 3.01%.
HDFC Mid-Cap Opportunities Fund manages assets of Rs 60,187 crore and HDFC Small Cap Fund manages Rs 28,599 crore.

Kotak Mutual Fund

Kotak Emerging Equity Fund and Kotak Small Cap Fund will take 17 days each to liquidate 25% of the portfolio. The top 10 investors The midcap and smallcap schemes will take 34 and 33 days to liquidate 50% of the portfolios.

The top 10 investors in the midcap scheme are 4.9% of the total AUM and around 1.18% of the smallcap scheme.

Kotak Emerging Equity Fund has allocated 12.83% in largecap, 69% in midcap, 15.50% in smallcap, and 2.67% in cash. Kotak Small Cap Fund has allocated 5.46% in large cap, 17.16% in midcap, 72.93% in small cap, and 4.45% in cash.

Kotak Emerging Equity Fund, the second largest scheme in the midcap category based on assets managed, manages assets of Rs 39,732 crore and Kotak Small Cap Fund manages assets worth Rs 14,189 crore.

Nippon India Mutual Fund

Nippon India MF will require 27 days to liquidate 50% of its midcap portfolio and 13 days for winding up 25% of the smallcap portfolio.

The number of days that will be required to liquidate 50% and 25% of the portfolio for Nippon India Growth Fund is seven and four days respectively. The total percentage of AUM held by the top 10 investors in midcap scheme is 1.54%, and 0.91% for smallcap scheme.

Nippon India Small Cap Fund manages assets worth Rs 46,044.13 crore as of February 29, 2024. Nippon India Growth Fund manages assets of Rs 24,480.78 crore.

Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund

Aditya Birla SL Mid Cap Fund will take 4 days to liquidate 50% of the portfolio and 2 days to liquidate 25%.
The number of days that will be required to liquidate 50% of Aditya Birla SL Small Cap Fund portfolio is 10 and for 25% of the portfolio is 5 days.

The top 10 investors in midcap scheme are 4.14% of the AUM and in small cap fund are 2.52% of the AUM.

The portfolio turnover ratio of the midcap scheme is 0.23 and for smallcap scheme is 0.42.

Aditya Birla SL Midcap Fund manages assets worth Rs 4,981 crore and Aditya Birla SL Small Cap Fund manages assets worth Rs 5,382 crore as of February 29.

Quant Mutual Fund

For Quant Small Cap Fund the number of days required to liquidate 50% and 25% of portfolios is 22 days and 11 days, respectively.

The number of days that will be required to liquidate 50% and 25% of the portfolio for Quant Mid Cap Fund is 6 and 3, respectively.

The total percentage of AUM held by the top 10 investors in the midcap scheme is 2.99%, whereas for the smallcap scheme it is 2.10%.

The upside capture ratio for the midcap scheme of the fund house is 1.16, revealing that the fund tends to outperform its benchmark during market upswings, capturing a larger portion of the benchmark’s positive returns.

Quant Mid Cap Fund managed assets of Rs 5,443 crore as of February 29, 2024. Quant Small Cap Fund manages assets worth Rs 17,232 crore.

Quantum Mutual Fund

Quantum Mutual Fund, which manages the smallest smallcap mutual fund scheme, released the results of its stress test showing that it would be able to liquidate its 100% of portfolio holdings within a day.

Quantum Smallcap Fund manages an asset base of Rs 39.18 crore, the lowest in the smallcap category. The concentration of top 10 investors as a percentage of AUM is less than 7%.

Edelweiss Mutual Fund

Edelweiss Mid Cap Fund will take one day to liquidate 25% of the portfolio and 2 days to liquidate 50% of the portfolio. Edelweiss Small Cap Fund will also take 2 days to liquidate 25% of the portfolio and 3 days to liquidate 50% of the portfolio.

The portfolio turnover ratio of the midcap scheme is 0.48 and for the smallcap scheme is 0.26. The top 10 investors as a percentage of AUM in midcap schemes are 1.56% and for smallcap schemes is 1.67%.

Edelweiss Mid Cap Fund manages assets of Rs 5,066 crore and Edelweiss Small Cap Fund manages assets of 3,198 crore.
