Scammer steals more than $45,000 from resident cryptocurrency account: Brecksville Police Blotter – cleveland.com

BRECKSVILLE, Ohio

Theft, Barkleigh Circle: On Dec. 8, a Barkleigh Circle resident came to the police station to report a theft.

An officer talked to the man who said someone completed unauthorized transactions on his Coinbase account.

Four days earlier the man tried to open his account via a cell phone but he continued to get messages saying it was locked.

A few days later, he became concerned.

He talked to customer service for 90 minutes through an elaborate unlocking account process before finally gaining access and learning in November someone changed the account name and transferred more than $45,000.

Not only didn’t he authorize the transaction but also didn’t know the account that received the funds.

After reaching out to Coinbase about the theft, they told him to file a police report.

There are no suspects. Police are investigating.
