All eyes will be on Samsung tomorrow with the Korean technology giant finally unleashing its new Galaxy S24 range of smartphones. Full details will be exposed during the firm’s Unpacked keynote in San Jose, California and if all the latest leaks and rumours turn out to be true, these refreshed Android devices could make the the current S23 look massively inferior. The big keynote kicks off from 6pm on Wednesday, January 17 and here’s everything that Samsung could improve on over its predecessor.
The S24 could be faster and more efficient
Every year phones get a little bit quicker and the S24 will be no exception. It looks almost certain that some versions of this device will get Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip inside which promises to push performance to new limits.
The 8 Gen 3 is around 20 percent faster than the previous Gen 2 and that’s not all as it also offers some major advances in AI, photography, movie making and gaming. It’s also more efficient meaning longer battery life.
Sadly, it appears that not every model of the S24 is going to get Qualcomm’s brain. Rumours are rife that Samsung will return to its old ways and add its own Exynos chip to some versions of its new devices.
We’ll have to wait and see exactly who is getting what but all models are expected to be quicker than the current S23.
Say goodbye to curved screens
One of our bugbears about the S23 Ultra was its curved display. Despite looking mightily impressive it simply makes using the giant 6.8-inch screen a little bit awkward – especially when trying to read emails or the daily news on websites.
Leaked images have given us a good idea of what of the S24 Ultra will look like and it seems the curvaceous display is gone with this flagship model getting a flat panel instead.
If true, it’s unclear why Samsung has taken this decision – maybe they have listened to feedback and made the switch.
The S24 will outsmart the S23
One thing that we do know for certain is that the S24 range will be smarter than anything the firm has launched before. AI is going to be a big feature of the S24 so expect plenty of clever features to be included when you lift it out of the box.
Samsung has already teased how Artificial Intelligence will be a part of the new range so watch this space for full details about how it will change the way you use your smartphone.
“Mobile technology has an incredible power to enable connection, productivity, creativity and more for people around the world, but until now, we haven’t seen mobile AI ignite that in truly meaningful ways,” said Wonjoon Choi, EVP and Head of R&D, Mobile Experience Business. “Galaxy AI is our most comprehensive intelligence offering to date, and it will change how we think about our phones forever.”
Improved camera
Samsung loves to make big noises about how good its cameras are and we expect the S24 range to be able to take even better photos than the already brilliant S23. From images leaked online it seems Samsung is sticking with its triple-lens set-up on the S23 and quad camera on the S24.
AI could also be used to improve things and add new features – Google has already introduced plenty of smart image upgrades on its Pixel devices so expect Samsung to follow with something similar.
New design
The final change that could be coming to these devices is a new look. It’s even thought that the S24 Ultra could follow Apple and get a Titanium finish which will help improve strength and durability.
