Sam Altman faces backlash as old video resurfaces amid DeepSeek’s rise

OpenAI founder Sam Altman is facing criticism online after an old video of him resurfaced, in which he dismissed the idea of building a competitive AI model on a $10 million budget as “hopeless.”

The clip, recorded during an Economic Times Conversations event in June 2023, features Altman responding to a question about the feasibility of creating a substantial AI model with limited resources. “It’s totally hopeless to compete with us on training foundation models,” Altman remarked—a statement that has drawn fresh criticism following recent advancements in the AI space.

Altman’s comments have come under renewed scrutiny as Chinese AI startup DeepSeek gains traction with its cost-efficient, groundbreaking technology. The startup’s chatbot has rapidly become the top-rated free application on Apple’s US App Store.

Sharing the video clip on X, Tech Mahidra’s former CEO, CP Gurnani in 2023 said, “OpenAI founder Sam Altman said it’s pretty hopeless for Indian companies to try and compete with them.
