Riverside City Councilmember Clarissa Cervantes was arrested early Saturday, July 1, on suspicion of DUI.

Cervantes, 32, who represents Ward 2, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on misdemeanor DUI charges shortly after 1 a.m. on the southbound 10 Freeway, according to jail records.

“Last night, I made an irresponsible decision that I deeply regret. I take full responsibility, and I want to apologize to my family, my community, and the residents of the district that I represent,” Cervantes said in a statement to the Southern California News Group.

There were no injuries, her spokesperson Derek Humphrey said.

Cervantes, who was elected in 2021, is the second openly LGBTQ and second Latina councilmember.

She is currently running for the 58th district state assembly seat to replace her sister, Assembly member Sabrina Cervantes.

Cervantes is next due in court on August 30.
