Reliance Jio adds the most number of wireless subscribers in June, outpacing Airtel


Reliance Jio added the most number of wireless subscribers in June, outpacing rival Bharti Airtel while cash strapped Vodafone Idea continued to lose further ground.

Reliance Jio’s net customer addition though slowed down in June 2023 at 2.3 million as compared to the 3 million net additions in previous month, according to the latest subscriber data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) Tuesday.

Jio’s closest competitor Bharti Airtel added 1.4 million subscribers (1.3 million in May) while Vodafone Idea’s customer churn continued in June though the pace of subscriber loss slowed down to 1.3 million subscribers as compared to 2.8 million users in May, data released by the sector regulator indicated.

Jio’s total subscriber base at the end of June was 438.58 million, Airtel’s was 373.72 million while Vodafone Idea’s customer base shrunk to 229.65 million.
Jio’s subscriber market share for June was 38.35% (38.17% in May) while Airtel commanded 32.68% (32.57% in May). Vodafone Idea further ceded market share to peers as its share decreased to 20.08% in June from 20.20% in May.Airtel’s active user base at June end was 99.74% (100.09% in May) while Jio saw active user base increase marginally to 94.51% as compared to 94.46% in May. Vodafone Idea saw a share of in active users decrease to 88.28% from 88.88% in May indicating loss of active users from its overall customer base.Rural wireless subscriptions grew by 561, 218 in the month of June, driven mainly by 1.08 million additions for Jio. Airtel added 385, 728 rural subscribers while Vodafone Idea lost 457, 782 rural subscribers.Overall wireless user addition at June end was 0.03%, though wireline subscriber addition showed growth of 3.23% that led to the overall telecom user base growing 0.11% month on month.

Growth in wireline subscriber base was led by APFPL adding 656, 424 users in June while Jio added 208, 014 users (325,336 wireline users added in May). Jio’s market share stood at 32.83% (33.18% in May). Airtel added 134, 021 wireline subscribers in May (market share 24.78% down from 25.12% in May) while Vodafone Idea lost 10, 215 wireline connections (market share 2.25%).

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) saw its subscriber market share shrink to 21.36% (22.26% in May) as it lost 59, 348 wireline customers in June.

The overall tele-density in the country grew to 84.43% (82.29% in May) after dipping for the previous months.

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests in May rose to 10.87 million (11.47 million in May) taking the cumulative MNP requests to 852.99 million in June from 842.12 million at the end of May.
