Rath Yatra security goes high-tech – Times of India

Ahmedabad: This year Rath Yatra will see three tech tools being introduced to monitor security arrangements during the procession.
The police officials will conduct 3D mapping of the entire route, and use anti-drone technology and mobile CCTV poles besides other tech tools to keep an eye on the goings-on along the route. All the vehicles will have GPS installed so that the police personnel can track their movement.
The‘Netrotsav’ ritual, in which the eyes of the three deities are blindfolded, was held at the temple on Sunday. As the legend goes, the deities caught conjunctivitis after visiting their maternal uncle and needed rest. The blindfolds are opened on the day of Rath Yatra after which the deities take a tour of the town.
Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel chaired a meeting on Sunday with the senior officials to review the yatra preparations. Later, MoS (home) Harsh Sanghavi visited the temple and reviewed the dress rehearsal on the procession route.
Senior city police officials said that a team of teachers and students of Anant National University (ANU) created a 3D interface based on the drone footage. The project gave the entire route a ‘game-like’ environment to understand the need to deploy force, the nearest entry and exit points, and the amenities etc. Officials associated with the project said that in 45 days, the team stitched together four lakh images to create the 3D interface. “It will familiarize the officials and personnel from outside the city to the route and deployment,” said an official.
Likewise, another university was approached for the anti-drone technology to block and capture unauthorized drones along the route, said officials. On Saturday, the city police officials reviewed a portable CCTV pole set up by a private company which can be connected to the control room. Five such poles will be used during the procession, said officials.
The meeting at Gandhinagar also elaborated on social media misuse before and during the procession. City and state level teams have been formed to monitor different media, said officials.
In all, the state will witness 198 processions on Tuesday. In Ahmedabad, along with the main Rath Yatra on the 18-km route, there will be six other yatras, said officials. On Sunday evening, the city police carried out dress rehearsals.
