PM Modi to inaugurate first under-river tunnel of Kolkata Metro on March 6. Here's all about it

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate first under-river tunnel of Kolkata Metro on March 6, Ashwini Vaishnaw today told PTI. Here’s all you need to know about it.

It is India’s first ever transportation project where trains will ply under the mighty river, Hooghly.

Infact, it is the first ever transportation tunnel under any river in India.

The length of river crossing is 520 meters and the internal diameter of each tunnel is 5.55 meters.

This tunnel under the river is 32 meters below the river bed.

The metro train will take less than a minute to cover the distance, providing them with a one-of-a-kind experience.Once this stretch is open, Howrah will be the deepest metro staion of the country as it will be 33 meters below the surface. The train is like to reduce the travel time for commuters significantly. Currently, the Green Line in Kolkata covers a small distance of 6. 97 km between Sector V in east Kolkata, and Phoolbagan. However, with this initiative, the train will cover a larger distance from Sector V to Howrah, under the Hooghly river, in a mere 27 minutes.

Airtel earlier claimed that it will deliver uninterrupted connectivity to metro commuters by deploying high-capacity nodes 35 meters below river Hooghly.
