Please stop this early Christmas madness – we need a law against it | Brief letters

The king’s speech (Report, 7 November) might have had more substance if it had included a bill to ban Christmas adverts and piped music before, say, 10 December. On 7 November, I was treated to a Christmas music loop in my mother’s care home, and assaulted by snow, sledging and Father Christmas in TV adverts. How do we curb this collective madness?

Our household sticks to British summer time all year round (Digested week, 3 November). This simply means getting up and going to bed an hour before everybody else. It is surprisingly easy to make the necessary mental adjustment for train times and so on. The result is that it doesn’t get dark before 5pm, which reduces the horror of long, dark evenings, and it’s easier to stay cheerful.

Tea at my local Wetherspoon’s pub has gone up to £1.02, so it’s not quite a £1 cuppa (Letters, 7 November), but you get free top-ups for as long as you like.

I’m all in favour of £1 cuppas, but I balk at Teresa Rodrigues’s mention of McDonald’s tea. Has she actually tried to drink it?

If the government wants to reduce binge drinking (Report, 7 November), pubs and restaurants should be told to stop serving large glasses of wine. On the continent, only small glasses are served.

I have been asked to provide a review of my new lavatory seat (Letters, 7 November). What criteria should I use?
