PATERSON — Fights among people in the grandstands forced officials to end Thursday night’s high school football game at Hinchliffe Stadium between Eastside and Passaic Tech in the fourth quarter.
Police said no one was injured in the brawl and no one was arrested. Tech was winning 30-0 when play was stopped, officials said.
What did officials say?
“The report I received stated that the game was ended prematurely and security was able to stabilize the situation within minutes,” said Mayor Andre Sayegh.
Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly, who is Paterson’s recreation coordinator, said “one knucklehead” was the cause of the fights, which he said didn’t pit fans from the two schools against each other.
“I just think it was a case of kids being kids,” Wimberly said, noting that no weapons were involved.
Representatives from the two school districts did not respond to messages seeking comment about the incident.

Was security adequate?
Officials said they believe there was enough security at the game, including off-duty police officers. Officials said additional on-duty police were dispatched to the stadium when the fights broke out.
The game included a halftime concert including one performer sponsored by the Paterson Police Department’s community affairs division, formerly known as community policing.
