OSU Wins Bedlam Showdown over OU to Secure Spot in Semifinals … – Big12Sports.com


ARLINGTON, Texas – The No. 2 seed Oklahoma State (39-17) defeated No. 7 seed Oklahoma (31-26) 8-3 in Game 10 of the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at Globe Life Field. 

The Cowboys advanced to the semifinals for the fifth time in the last six Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championships.

 

Oklahoma State’s offense exploded in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead over the Sooners. After Nolan Schubart was walked, and a hit by Colin Brueggemann, David Mendham’s homerun put the Cowboys up 3-0 with one out. Roc Riggio’s RBI punched Marcus Brown in, who was hit-by-pitch, for a 4-0 Cowboys lead. OSU added another run with a sacrifice fly from Carson Benge to bring its lead to 5-0.

 

The Sooners got on the board in the fifth inning, when John Spikerman was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 5-1. 

 

Oklahoma State added to their lead in the sixth inning with an RBI sacrifice fly by Riggio that brought home Nolan Mclean. 

 

In the seventh inning, Bayden Root entered for OSU to relieve Drew Blake following back-to-back walks. Root loaded the bases with zero outs after Rocco Garza-Gongora was hit-by-pitch. Spikerman scored Jackson Nicklaus on an RBI single through the left side, before Pettis brought Wallace Clark in on a ground out to shortstop, cutting the lead to 6-3. Bayden Root got the Cowboys out of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.

 

The Cowboys added two runs on Mendham’s single to center field in the seventh inning, extending the lead to 8-3.

 

Oklahoma State’s Ben Abram (8-2) collected the win, going 6.0 innings with three strikeouts, and allowing six hits and one earned run.

Oklahoma’s Will Carsten (1-3) was credited with the loss after throwing 1.1 innings where he allowed two hits and four runs (all earned) with one walk and no strikeouts.

 

OSU will face sixth-seeded Texas Tech on Saturday, May 27 at 12:30 p.m. CT on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. The Cowboys will need to win twice against the Red Raiders to advance to the Championship final while one loss eliminates Oklahoma State.
