Operation Spark to hold Summer 2023 Coding Camps

Tuition-free spots available to public school students

 

Operation Spark, a non-profit coding bootcamp that provides training in software development for adults and youth across Louisiana, is hosting its annual Summer Coding Camp for students in Grades 10-12 and graduating seniors. Classes will run Monday through Friday from June 1-June 30. Course times are either 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m depending on the class and format. Virtual and in-person classes are being offered.

Applicants are encouraged to apply soon to ensure a spot. To register, go to:  www.operationspark.org and click on “High School Application.” Priority deadline is April 15.

“We believe that every high school student should be exposed to the fundamental concepts and skills of software development,” said Operation Spark CEO, John Fraboni. “Through our courses, students will learn invaluable skills such as tech literacy, problem-solving, creativity and professional collaboration, while building a portfolio of websites, mobile apps, and video game projects and earning Industry Based Credentials.”

There are a limited number of tuition-free spots available for public and parochial school students who attend Operation Spark partner schools; students who attend non-partner schools are eligible for tuition discounts.

Two levels of courses will be offered. Students new to Operation Spark can enroll in the Level 1 Fundamentals of HTML, CSS and Javascript, earning 1 Carnegie Credit and a Basic IBC. There is no prerequisite for this course. , Students will create a personal website using HTML and CSS, then build a portfolio of animation and video game projects, practicing fundamental skills in Javascript along the way.

Students who have completed Operation Spark’s Fundamentals course can enroll in the Level 2 Advanced Javascript, Functional Programming and Web Development, earning 1 Carnegie Credit plus a Level 2 IBC.  As part of this course,  students will deep dive into advanced programming concepts, jQuery, functional programming, and higher order functions as well as build their portfolio using libraries, basic data structures and classic video games.

Completed courses are eligible for college credit at Tulane’s School of Professional Advancement and Delgado Community College. Students who complete the Advanced course are also eligible to enter Operation Spark’s professional-level workforce training program upon high school graduation.

To attend virtually, students need a laptop, desktop, or Chromebook, a working mic and webcam, and a reliable internet connection.
