NYPD enhances drone detection capabilities with specialized van – IndiaTimes

The NYPD in order to enhance its capabilities in preventing potential aerial terror threats has entered into an agreement to acquire an advanced drone-detection vehicle, as reported by The New York Post.
According to a public solicitation, NYPD intends to purchase a customized ‘Trident Series Command Center with Drone Detection nodes’ from Flymotion which is a Florida-based company.
The customized vehicle will assist the department to effectively tackle the risks associated with Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or drones, especially those that may be used for malicious purposes, such as carrying explosives or harmful substances.
The Trident vehicle by Flymotion was initially introduced in 2016. It is designed to function as a mobile drone command center and was estimated to cost approximately $300,000 at the time of its debut.
The vehicle is loaded with a couple of large flat-panel displays to show video feeds from two to four different sources. Law enforcement officers can operate NYPD drones from within the vehicle and relay the captured footage to the police headquarters or other relevant locations.
However, it’s unclear whether the vehicle will be equipped with technology to disable drones, a feature that could be problematic in a densely populated city where individuals might be at risk from crashing drones or falling debris.
The NYPD has stated that it is currently evaluating the feasibility of acquiring this specialized vehicle.
