NTPC eyes 30 GW coal-fired capacity addition by FY32


New Delhi: NTPC Ltd plans to create fresh coal-based power capacity of 30 GW by FY32, compared to its earlier target of adding 26 GW capacity by FY31, in view of rising demand for base load in the country, people aware of the development said.

All expansion will be brownfield, for which the company has sufficient land, one of the persons said.

In the ongoing financial year, NTPC may commission around 3 GW of thermal power capacity, from 660 MW added in FY25. It may award around 8 GW of thermal power project work in the current fiscal, similar to last year.

As for renewable energy capacity, the country’s largest integrated power company is looking to add 5 GW in FY26 compared with 3.3 GW in the just-concluded fiscal.

In FY25, NTPC’s target was to add around 3.1 GW, as per its latest post-earnings conference call report.


The company is looking to enhance its coal mining capacity as well. Its coal production target for FY26 is 50 million tonnes.Its 2,800-MW Mahi-Banswara nuclear project in joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India may start the works in the next two months, the person cited above said.
