The Mono County Sheriff’s Office is informing others about the new Facebook scam, how it happens, and what to do if it does.
Uhoh! A friend tagged you in a post, and you just had to know who died. Now your profile is posting that link and tagging your friends. You’ve been hacked, and your computer could be compromised.
If you see yourself tagged in this type of post, or see one while scrolling, be sure not to click on it.
If you have already fallen victim to the phishing scam, here are some steps from cyber security experts on what you can do afterward:
- Change your password immediately to avoid being locked out of the account
- Check your security settings to log out of any devices or locations you don’t recognize
- Report the message to Facebook
- Make sure that no unfamiliar email addresses have been added to your account
- Change your email password also, for good measure
- Turn on two-factor authentication for your account
- Scan your computer or phone with anti-virus software.
