New security technology added to Pellston Regional Airport – UpNorthLive.com

EMMET COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — A northern Michigan airport has received a technology upgrade to make boarding a little easier.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has installed an advanced imaging technology system at the Pellston Regional Airport, meant to better respect passengers’ privacy at the security checkpoint.

In a statement, the TSA said the system uses an algorithm to produce generic images of people while it’s detecting objects, with the goal of reducing false alarm patdowns.

The airport’s director said that upgrades like this are a statewide effort.

“The previous federal security director, director Steve Lorincz, over the last year or so, he’s really made it a point to improve the technologies in all Michigan airports,” said airport director Ryan Bachelor.

“I think it’s really going to help the passenger experience,” Bachelor said. “It’s a bigger piece of machinery, so it somewhat shrinks the area in there, but… it’s going to improve that experience and the efficiency of people getting on the planes.”

Bachelor said the state-of-the-art technology is a big step forward for one of northern Michigan’s smaller airports.
