This new item powered by AI could be a gamechanger for pet owners.
No more will you wake up to your pet cat dropping a dead mouse or half-eaten bird onto your bed in the middle of the night – and yes, we speak from experience.
A brand new cat flap, called a Flappie, can automatically stop your pet from entering your home, and its 90% accuracy should only improve as the AI gets to know your cat better.
Cats kill up to 275 million birds, mice, and other animals every year in the UK, so it’s no wonder plenty of us find the creatures half eaten or sometimes still alive in our homes.
But with this device, you’ll be able to see what the cat tried to drag in as it will record any attempted entry with a night vision camera.
The Flappie sells for £310, so it’s not the cheapest pet gadget out there, but if your cat is a prolific hunter it could be well worth the money.
The device will be available to buy in Europe this spring, and it was unveiled this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The flap remains locked until motion sensors detect that a cat has appeared, before scanning its microchip to ensure it is at the right house.
This triggers an infrared camera, installed just above the opening, to scan the cat’s face and, using AI, determine if it is carrying anything.
Oliver Widler, one of the creators of the Flappie, said: ‘We found that cats are remarkably intelligent. Dixie, Rocky, and our other test cats learned to drop their prey fairly quickly.’
