Navy recruits visit Veterans Museum | News, Sports, Jobs – Warren Tribune Chronicle

CANFIELD — A small group of young men and women, accompanied by members of the Navy recruiting office in Boardman, visited the War Veterans Museum in Canfield on Thursday.

The group was able to check out the 45,000-plus artifacts, see and touch history.

“These are all future sailors who have signed up,” Petty Officer Garret Silsbe said. “They are part of a delayed entry program.”

Many are high school seniors finishing up their high school career. Those students already have made their mind up and have committed to entering the Navy but must still wait for the end of school. This program keeps them involved and prepares them for their future.

In the program, these young people meet regularly and are prepared for basic training. Included in the gatherings are field trips as a group to places of interest, such as the museum.

Each student has their own reason for choosing a career in the Navy.

Astaria Shattuck, a senior from Hubbard High School said she wanted to travel. Samara Martin from United Local High School in Hanoverton said the Navy offered her job security. Anastasia Thomas from Boardman High School said she liked the job opportunities.

Alexander Spaulding, 20, a graduate of Collegiate Academy in Erie, Pa., said he already has a chosen field. He is planning to be an EOD Tech, which is a person who deals with explosive ordinance disposal.

“I think everyone was impressed with the museum tour,” Silsbe said. “We are hoping to make this a stop every three months for those in the delayed entry program.”
