National Security Legislation Would Force Tech Firms Into Complex … – Law.com


There’s an elephant in a contentious new bipartisan bill, and it’s the ban of a popular app scrutinized by multiple White House administrations: TikTok.

Last week, a group of senators from across party lines introduced the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology, or the RESTRICT Act, seeking to expand the secretary of commerce’s power to regulate foreign technologies and entities from operating in the U.S. if deemed a threat to national security. The bill specifically mentions six foreign adversaries under its scope: Cuba, Iran, Venezuela, Russia, North Korea and China.
