Nasscom releases guidelines for responsible AI use

Technology industry body Nasscom on Tuesday released a set of guidelines for defining the “responsible” use of generative artificial intelligence.

The guidelines address obligations for researchers, developers and users of generative AI models and applications, and emphasise conducting comprehensive risk assessments and maintaining internal oversight throughout the entire lifecycle of a generative AI solution. Misinformation, IP infringement, data privacy violation, propagation of biases, large-scale disruption of life and livelihood, environmental degradation and malicious cyberattacks are some of the top harms and malpractices that the guidelines try to mitigate during the use of generative AI.

For the development of generative AI solutions, the guidelines recommend cautious use and risk assessment of the potential harm caused by deployment of such solutions- throughout their lifecycle. The guidelines also call for publicly disclosing data and algorithm sources unless developers can prove that disclosing such information can harm public safety.

“Self-governance is a useful tool to fill the gap between innovation and regulation and I would urge the technology industry to lead by example by taking these guidelines to the next step of adoption and building practices and tools that can be used across all sectors,” said Alkesh Kumar Sharma, secretary at the electronics & information technology ministry.

The guidelines also advise the explainability of outputs generated by these generative AI algorithms as well as grievance redressal mechanisms to address mishaps during development or use of such solutions.
